Review Text

In spite of the intense and crowded history which prefaces each episode, there is only a tenuous link between the individuals (here mainly Jewish residents of Gibraltar) who represent various epochs from Cro-Magnon times to the present. For those who enjoy a recurrent artifact in the archives, there's a small ivory figurine, filched from a prehistoric remains and carved by a lusty maiden from 600 B.C., that passes from hand to hand. Among the Rock dwellers: peasants and patricians, soldiers and priests, barbarians, Romans, Goths, Moors, Spanish, British, Jewish women who procreated purposefully, Jewish men who sustained, fled from and searched again for their faith. There are conflicts with spears, arrows and guns; hasty exoduses; and one explicitly busy evening in a courtesan's chamber. Mr. Masters is an old hand with imbroglios in foreign climes and times (from The Nightrunners of Bengal on) and manages to invest the incidents with an air of looming import, but it's a stone's throw from very light nightcap entertainment.
