Review Text

Like Robin in the Greenwood (1968), this is a dramatic ordering and retelling of traditional ballads. Taken from the Lytell Geste, they include several familiar episodes: how Robin helped Sir Richard of Lee Outwit a greedy abbot; Little John's short employment by the Sheriff of Nottingham; the Sheriff's attempted revenge; and Robin's subsequent encounter with the disguised King Edward. As in the first volume, no music is included but the text can be read aloud and there are many possibilities for easy dramatization: Serraillier's language is both graceful and lively, a tempered combination of the past and the present. None of these songs is in Malcolmson's Song of Robin Hood but the book's real value is in the stylish presentation of classic adventure crisply and simply told. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
