Not illustrated. 1876 edition. Excerpt: ...nature of the provision made for teachers in the " Notes on Scripture Lessons," published by the Sundayschool Union. The apology made on behalf of the Union was that the necessary limitations of space in a penny monthly publication rendered a better provision impossible. The average space then devoted to each lesson in the "Notes" was three pages, and the subject was the Gospel history; but Mr. Mimpriss, in his manuals, had only devoted one page to a lesson, and into that page he had put (1) a summary of the facts of the lesson, (2) a series of explanations of difficult words or phrases, (3) a clear indication of the geography of the lesson, (4) an epitome of the practical truths taught in the narrative, (5) a series of references connecting the lesson with its predecessors, and (6) two sets of questions with which to catechise the children--first, in the facts of the lesson, and, secondly, in its explanations of words and phrases. In short, while the Sunday-school Union confessed that they could not give all the information desirable to a teacher in three pages, Mr. Mimpriss had done it, beyond all question, in one page, many years before. Eeference has already been made to the importance which Mr. Mimpriss attached to geography in the study of the life of Christ, as recorded by the four Evangelists. This was illustrated by the elaborate set of maps of our blessed Saviour's journeys, which he prepared, and by the fact that these were among his very first productions towards a thorough instruction in the Saviour's history.
