Review Text

Physically and spiritually maimed by his captivity in a French Revolutionary prison, Rebel Stephen Parkin hopes to recapture Ms idealism by teaching the children of the poor in a Manchester charity school. The attractions of Miss Lucy Winter, daughter of the school's wealthy patron, soon prove stronger than the redeeming joys of dosing his pupils with cod liver oil and sums, and since Mr. Winter soon-comes under attack from Manchester's Tories, Stephen's efforts to do good are once more interrupted by dots, unruly mobs and a stay in prison. Mr. Winter and Stephen are charged with treason, and at their trial (modeled after an actual case) the chief witness against them comes to the stand drunk and recants his testimony, vindicating English justice and the reformers' patriotism. The soot of polluted Manchester and the suspicions aroused by a relatively timid group of social activists establish both relevance and authenticity of background. However, young Stephen Parkin never seems to outgrow either his impulsiveness or his tendency toward self pity, and qualities that were appropriate to his Rebel days make him ill-fitted for the serious business of domestic politics. Rudderless. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
