Review Text

Viewing this dog-and-boy tale in the cold grey light of the 1960's is a bit like sending grandmother's hand crocheted doilies to the cleaners-somehow they just don't weather through. Bless them (or it), the Cumberland fells still have sheep and sheepdogs, a pub for codgers, hard-working sheepmen. Then there is an ill treated Collie (goodness!) bitch gone wild who bears a litter, all of which including the (goodness!) bitch are killed leaving Rex, wild, snarling, untamed. Who tames Rex, and who acquires a fiercely devoted companion, and who is saved by the F.D.C.? - none other than five-year-old Johnny who Butch Jenkins it throughout this furred and matted tale. If one shifts focus a bit, and places this effort within the boy-and-dog scale, there is still a fatal flaw: Rex, although coming through in the pinches, is rather a simpleton for a Collie, just doesn't have the personality of Lassie, Lad of Sunnybank or his mother (goodness!) the bitch. By the author of The Running Foxes (1967) and Breed of Giants (1966) this old dog should be retired for nostalgic showing only. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
