Review Text

This is a collection of "the complete writings and messages of Camillo Torres," the priest-sociologist who was killed in 1966 while fighting alongside the revolutionary guerrillas of Colombia. The forty-seven pieces which comprise this work demonstrate that Torres was a bad writer and a worse orator, a rather naive sociologist, an insubordinate priest, and a wholly inspired revolutionary whose sincerity, ideas and ideals, as well as his actions, are capable of stirring even the most latent dissenter to action. Most of Torres' writings deal with the pressing religious and socio-economic problems of today: the true function of priest and Church, education, communism, poverty, and, above all, the absolute necessity of national liberation for the suppressed peoples of the world. The turgidity of his style evaporates in the fire of his words; and one is astonished, upon closing the book, not that he was killed by the Colombian establishment, but that he was allowed to live so long and to do so much. (The Romans went about such things much more quickly.) The translations are uniformly good, and the editor's preface is equal to Torres' own spirit. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
