Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ...hope will not be given in vain. There is a standing by the old paths and the old doctrines that is very refreshing. Evolution is to him "a baseless and barren philosophy. There are here and there flashes of exposition that are very fine, as when he sets forth how the Prodigal Son became his own master, "the lord, the companion, and the servant of swine." But our readers will ask what is the purpose of the book. Well, we are not quite clear, but so far as we have made it out, it is an exposition of the Divine Sonship of Jesus, and of what is implied in Sonship, both for Him and His followers. But we warn away all lovers of exact theology. They will only be shocked by this courageous, flowing, and promiscuous piece of writing. Rev. Alex. T. Harrison, B.D. Problems Of ChrisTianity And Scepticism. (London: Longmans, Green and Co.) 7s. 6d. The sub-title is a much more accurate description of the contents of this volume. It really is " Lessons from twenty years' experience in the fi: ld of Christian evidence/' For twenty yars, to our knowleuge, Mr. Harrison has been well known, particularly in the north of England, as a very clever, taking, and successful lecturer on Christian evidences. He has spoken and debated in public and in private with all sorts of unbelievers, never to his shame and very seldom to hi' confusion. In his work he has learnt many and valuable lessons, am here, together with some splendid stories, these lessons are very vigorously driven home. The book ought to have a large sale. It is invaluable for all those who have to deal with the shallower sort of sceptics. We gladly welcome the eighth volume of this Interesting scriei. Each volume contains twelve Biographies by a competent authority, well bound and printed....show more
