The-trust company which printed a scare head notice. legal looking and severe. "Better make your will today. tomorrow may be too late," also succeeded in repelling people instead of the opposite. As a further example. a few seasons ago a firm wanting to F0" a child's medicine printed a picture of the "Doctor." You may have seen this heart-breaking picture of a doctor leaning over a sick child, with a look of anxiety on his face. An automobile fixture firm recently printed a picture of a street accident depicting two automobiles in a smash-up, an ambulance in attendance, the victim of the smash-up on a stretcher under which the slogan printed "Just after the accident." All of these may be forceful illustrations. but it is doubtful if either could sell a dollar's worth of goods to most people. Another type of advertising which repels instead of compels is the glaring window sign of red lurid flames and letters a foot high reading "Fire Sale." /Vho wants to buy smelly. smoky, water-soaked goods, if the sign is really true? A short time ago a maker of toys placed a bubble pipe on the market. Thinking to be smart he printed a picture of the old time, so-called "Mick," under which were the words, "Mike and his pipe." Before the poster was dry on the fence, it was torn down by sons of the Emerald Isle. who in outraged dignity rebelled. This same error vas recently made by another firm which used another nationality in an cfifort to sell raincoats. A few seasons ago a soap concern printed a picture of a dirty tramp and the vords...
