They had begun to reason upon the inutility of the office, and the great expence of supporting it, before they were shewn the real thing, and had seen the practical part exhihited to their faces. Had the King's Ministers been wise, they would have allowed him to have gone on the Continent, to meet his brothers of the Holy Alliance, or any where rather than to Scotland. They could not'have sent him any where so well calculated to lessen his consequence and to stir up a feeling against the utility of his character and office. Thousands of empty heads and vacant minds who had thought there was something supernatural in the thing, from the clamour that has been generally made about it, must have gone to their homes with the greater astonishment, that they had seen nothing more than a man, who neither cultivates his farm, nor his mind, nor adds a tittle to the general property of the country; but about whom an expence is incurred, and a waste of property is made, that would fill the bellies and clothe the hacks of all the crippled, disabled, or aged persons in the country, who could not labour to support themselves.
