Unfortunately the wheat crop is liable to the attacks of a number of fungi other than the rust, and the more important of these, from the farmer's point of view, are here enumerated, with suggestions as to mode of prevention or treatment as borne out by the results of experiments. The term smut is used in such a loose sense by many and is applied to such different diseases that the first requisite is to define what we mean by it, and to know exactly what we are talking about. Smut is a general term applied to different though closely-allied diseases, and a distinction is usually made according to the plant it attacks, such as oat-smut, wheat-smut, maize-smut, onion-smut, potatosmut, 8:0. But even difierent smuts may appear on the same plant, such as the so-called loose-smut, stinking-smut, and flag-smut of wheat.
