Work to secure good oral expression. Teach pupils to look ahead to get the thot and yet read connectedly and smoothly. Pupils should be led by questioning to perceive the relation between the appropriate expression and the intended meaning. The substance of the lessons should be stated orally by the pupils. Work in phonic drill and diacritical markings continued. FOURTH GRADE. Baldwin's Fourth Reader and one or two supplementary readers. SUPPLEMENTARY READING. Stories of Great Americans for Little Americans. Harper's Third Reader. Cyr's Book Four. American Life and Adventure. Lights to Literature, Book Three. Use lists of words found in the back of the reader preparatory to using the dictionary. Call attention to the arrangement of the words in alphabetical order and give the pupils drill in finding words rapidly; also drill in rapid but distinct pronunciation of words placed upon the board. Develop the meaning of every new word before beginning the lesson. This will prevent, in a great measure, hesitating and stumbling. Thot getting should now be made prominent and fluency in oral expression should be secured. The task imposed upon the pupil in this grade is to read the lesson intelligently and intelligibly. In this and the succeeding grades pupils ought to be furnished with library lists made out under the supervision of the teacher. FIFTH GRADE.
