Excerpt: ...of our Association, and that the members who are in the East, where the water is pure, will have much better success with a given amount of heating surface than we who are in the West, where the water is bad and our boilers corrode. I think the question for us to determine is, what is the requisite amount of heating surface to the square foot of cylinder where the water is pure? I find on some portions of our road I can get in effect at least 25 per cent, more heating surface, on account of the water being pure, than I can on other portions where it is not. I think, for this reason, it would be very hard for us to determine a given number of feet of heating surface for all sections, as very much depends on that point. I think the present proportion is good enough, but when you have bad water, of course it requires more water space and heating surface. Mr. Wells, Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis Railroad---Mr. President, it seems to me this question has some reference to a taper boiler. I will diaw a diagram on the blackboard so as to illustrate the taper boiler which has been referred to in our discussion. (Mr. Wells here made a diagram, illustrating the taper boiler, on the blackboard.) Mr. Wells, Jeffersonville, Madison & Indianapolis Railroad--Now, if in the case of a taper boiler the tubes must be crowded together in the forward end, it might be a question, after all, whether a boiler that is practically straight would not be the most economical. The larger diameter of the latter form at the forward end would contain more water than the taper boiler, and that advantage might fairly be considered at least equal to the cost of carrying the additional weight on the truck, while at the same time the weight carried on the...
