In the event of a bureau not being furnished with afixed press, there will be no inconvenience, if the operations are not of importance, in using the small press for the marks of original verification of measures of capacity, the three stamps being adapted for both kinds of presses. It is, however, recommended, when employing either press, to apply the stamp lightly, using only just suflicient pressure for the purpose; and it should be observed that the direction to make this impression as light as possible does not authorize using more force than what is found absolutely necessary. The stamps with the annual letter should for the most part be aflixed on the weights and measures by the side of the marks both of original verification and of annual marks previously made. Verificatenrs should take care to refer to the regulations applicable to each description of weights and measures. As to balances, the annual letter should be afiixed either on the pans or on the platform. Manufacturers are bound to fix two bits of pewter on their tin-plate measures, one on the junction of the bottom with the body of the measure, the other near the rim. The impression of the crown ought to be made on the first of these two. As it might be diflicult to use the presses intended for this process, the stamping of these kinds of measures may be effected by placing a beaked anvil inside them, and then using 14 Mode oi' stumping. 18.
