Only a few meagre facts are now to be obtained, concerning the condition of the Public Schools, prior to 1841. That they were far inferior to the private schools established and conducted in those early years of the city's young life, appears evident from a brief reference to them, to be found in O'Reiley's History of Rochester. After speaking of the old Rochester High School---not a free school-and the Female Seminaries on Alexander and Fitzhugh streets, the historian says: " In addition to the seminaries already mentioned, there are several select schools in the city, the whole number of that class being eighteen.
