Not illustrated. 1919 edition. Excerpt: ...Mr. Fred Hummel, of New Orleans, delivered an exhaustive treatise on the subject of installation of fuel-oil burning equipment. Mr. Hummell's paper was as carefully prepared and treated on a technical subject as if it were for presentation before an engineering society. The gentlemen was so thoroughly familiar with the subject and aside from giving more statements of results already established his entire paper was full of helpful suggestions for accomplishing the purposes intended. He compared the heavy aind light oils, analysed temperatures at which they should be burned and warned his auditors that experiments in the matter were costly. He advised especially that while the installation of oil burning may be simple, it is actually standardized. There was no doubt in the speaker's mind but that the burning of oil results in a marked advantage over coal. He did not, however, make claims which were extreme but rather analyzed the whole working basis and gave information which indicated careful study and most thorough knowledge. In the oil burning sections so much gratuitous knowledge is seldom available and the men interested in the subject found exceptional opportunity for improving their own knowledge on the matter of burning fuel oil. The session then took recess until afternoon. Afternoon Session--Wednesday, Dec. 10th. Immediately following the convening of members for the Wednesday afternoon session, Mr. E. A. Bird, of Addis, La., was called on. Mr. Bird made an interesting and valuable talk on systematic repairs, detailing the work of the engineer in this respect from boiler to roof.
