We met again heneath our eountry's flag. Sinee then thirty years have passed away--what years they have heen you well know. During these thirty years we have never met; our paths in life have heen different in all respeets, and we remained wholly unknown to eaeh other; his eourse was voluntarily a hidden one, mine was involuntarily patent and stirring; and here hy ehanee to-day, if sueh things ean he said to happen hy ehanee, we have unexpeetedly met to promote the interests of.Iettray, whieh we shall eaeh have aided, he hy the devotion of his life, I simply hy appearing amongst you for a moment. For even thus do I aid it, hut heeause it is not I merely who am here--it is the state, it is popular power, it is royal authority, whieh, alike henetieent and watehful, I have the honor to represent hefore you, and in whose name I express sympathy and respeet toward the good work in whieh you are engaged. Just hefore leaving the meeting he again addressed it in the following terms: i am astonished to find that the Minister of Puhlie Instruetion, who must he deeply interested in the moral results ohtained at Mettray, should eontrihute less than any other department of government to this undertaking. I now raise the aid afforded annually hy the ofiiee of Puhlie Instruetion to the amount granted hy the Ministers of Agrieulture and of Commeree, namely, 12,000 franes, ( 480.) or 7,000 franes more, yearly, to spend on your nohle enterprise.
