Cam and Laurie are two young women, bright, smart and gutsy; but when Laurie jumps from the top of an Auckland hotel, Cam tries to piece together the fragments left behind. The story moves amongst Cam's memories of Laurie, the South Auckland town where they lived in the late 1960s, early 70s, high school, their feral friends and wild parties. After a neighbour is beaten up, losing her unborn baby, and another girl is pack-raped, the story becomes threaded with memories from Laurie's mother, K the, who grew up in 1930s Berlin and was sent to Auschwitz with her mother after her father was killed. The violence and trauma of both the past and present haunt her; they also become inflicted on Laurie, and an unbearable sequence of events leads to the two girls leaving town. When Cam returns to her home town, the gaps between what happened and the things that have been buried cannot be avoided. Cam and her friends slowly learn to forgive.
