The number was somewhat reduced by a certain practice in vogue, --that of rowing forty strokes a minute for twenty minutes at a stretch; but, nevertheless, a good handful reached the riverAll remaining dead-wood was removed by the use of the pair-oar gig, and a few tough, plucky boys were left. Soon came the Class Races for the Powel cup. (N. B.--The Powel cup holds six pints, or, rather, counts six pints for the White cup.)
