Energy for this system should not be taken from the navigating light circuit. When the electrically operated valve for this system is located more than 5 feet from the whistle an automatic drain-feature for whistle steam pipe should be installed. All wires and cables used should conform to specifications found elsewhere in these rules.. 200 201 Telephones and Voice Tubes. There should be installed a voice tube from the navigating telegraph (with branches to all transmitters on the system) to the engine room, of. at least 2 in. diameter equipped with spring whistle mouthpieces and designating nameplates. When the horizontal distance between these stations exceeds 150 feet the voice tube should be replaced by a watertight loud speaking telephone, the conversation over which should be audible 5 feet from the receiver. There should be installed a 1%-in. voice tube with spring whistle mouthpiece between the helmsman position-and the captain's quarters if same are separated by two partitions or bulkheads. There should be installed a 2-in. voice tube spring whistle mouthpiece from the operating gear in the engine room to the chief engineer's room. There should be installed, for communication between the pilot house and the radio room, a 2-in. voice tube with spring whistle mouthpiece, when the distance does not exceed 150 feet; when this distance is exceeded, a loud speaking telephone, as described above, should be installed.
