The Rear Guard
The City Superintendent of Schools, Louise Hambrick-Hall, was found dead nude in her bed. The only person in the room was the minister of the city's largest church. He didn't kill her but everyone else in town thought he did. Alan Givens believed his only hope was Sam Hart who had just driven into town to begin work in a decaying church jammed in beside a hardware store. But Hart couldn't help anyone. His wife and daughter had been killed five years earlier and he had let himself go. He had stopped working. He was coming back but he wasn't ready to help anyone. Alan Givens wanted Sam to save him from going to prison. Stella Hunter wanted Sam to stop Skip Lowtower from beating his ten year old son. Rod Stock, the city prosecutor, who didn't like Givens, didn't think Sam would be any problem. Clyde Brown, a black, and Laura Palmas, a P.R., were working the homicide, and they didn't think Sam would make any difference at all. Everyone was in for a surprise.
