Until 1918, the town was part of the Duchy of Carinthia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Ravne na Koro kem. It is the largest town in the traditional Slovenian province of Carinthia and is its capital. The name Ravne na Koro kem literally means 'Ravne in Carinthia'. The word ravne means 'flat terrain' in Slovene, and is a common place name in the Slovene-inhabited territories. The name of the settlement was changed from Gu tanj to Ravne na Koro kem in 1952.
