Our customer reviews

A vicious sabre-toothed tiger - or, rather, the ghost of one - stalks the Scottish mountain of Endrith and the Valley of Shadows below. Karbel - the Beast of this trilogy - is on the prowl and woe betide anyone who challenges his kingdom. But change is on the way, as humans excavate the ground to build a new bypass. There's great excitement when the bones of a woolly mammoth who lived ten thousand years ago are unearthed. Soon, his skeleton will be on display in the Natural History Museum. It quickly emerges, though, that rather more than a set of ancient bones has been disturbed. Two local boys, Cameron and Jack, out for a bike ride, are pursued by a massive, rampaging creature whose aim is clearly to destroy everyone and everything it meets. The whole valley is under threat from this fearsome newcomer. But it's Karbel who recognises the intruder and faces the final battle of his time on earth. This is the most exciting book I've read in a long time. For sheer thrill and terror, it's unbeatable. Ann Evans's descriptions of Endrith are so evocative you soon believe you are actually there, and your heart beats faster as you catch a whiff of the long-dead mammoth's appalling stench and feel the earth vibrate under its pounding hooves. The story grips you in its powerful teeth and will not let you go until the end - till Karbel has met his final challenge and achieved his longed-for ambition. A wonderful, evocative and terrifying tale that I would have loved as a child, love now, and will be buying, I hope, for my grandchildren in a few years' time. The Beast Trilogy is complete, but I hope Ann Evans will write many more books like this.show more
