Mr. Toltz's paper is timely. We believe that there is a wide field within which electric power can be applied to railway operation. The now generally recognized attempt to abate the smoke nuisance in large cities points to the inevitable substitution at an early date, within their limits, of the electric motor for the coal-burning locomotive. In zones of dense suburban traffic, moreover, the greater speed of operation which is possible by the use of electricity argues for its general adoption. There is no reasonable doubt, moreover, that electric power can be advantageously applied to the operation of heavy grades, especially where cheap water power is available. At such points the advantage of electric power lies not so much in its economy as in the more rapid forwarding of freight from sections of the line where, owing to heavy grades, congestion is especially likely to occur. Electricity may also be profitably used in light freight traffic for short distances. It may be that we have not enumerated all the possibilities of the electric motor in railway operation but even admitting all that can reasonably be claimed for electricity, there still remains for the steam locomotive the task of moving long distance freight and passenger traffic, by far the most important part of the public service which the railroads render.
