BURNETT, DAIRY SECTION The time to begin feeding a dairy calf is before it is born. The great single factor that goes to determine what a. calf is to be is the breeding that lies back of it and the second factor is the way the calf is fed and handled until maturity. The cow feeds her calf during the time of the gestation period just as surely as she does after the birth of the calf. Cows in poor condition give birth to weak calves that are difiicult and expensive to raise. The cow should be dried oil' at least six weeks before the expected time of parturition. This is a paying practice because the amount of milk that the cow will give after freshening will be very materially increased if she be given such a rest before calving. The cow should freshen in a clean well-bedded stall to avoid danger of infection. If white scours has been present in the barn, the navel of the new-born calf should be disinfected with tincture of iodine as this is the point of entry of the bacteria to the body of the calf. The first milk or colostrum should be given to the calf as this milk is high in mineral matter and albumin and has the fat present in smaller quantities. These two changes in the milk cause it to be laxative and start the digestive tract of the calf to functioning properly. With the higher testing breeds it is best to remove the calf from the cow on the second day as the rich milk may cause digestive disturbances.
