Precisely according to the state of the heart will be the tenor of his life and conduct: as is the fountain so are the streams proceeding therefrom; as is the root so is the fruit. The root of a tree or plant may be compared to the heart or will; the fruit to the life or conduct proceeding therefrom. Affections from love in the will produce thoughts; but thoughts do not produce affections: it appears as if they produce them, but it is a fallacy; the reason that affections produce thoughts is, because they proceed from the will or desire. Affections may be considered not the heart or will, but as so many streams proceeding therefrom, as the media to convey'the desires or inclinations into the understanding. GOOD THOUGHTS. "Oh! poor are they who spend their power In sensual joys and strife, I'll think more rapture in an hour, Than they feel through a life. Sweet thoughts of Christ whom I adore, Entwined by many a link; God! what can I of thee crave more P Do I not live and think?" "Guard well thy thoughts;--our thoughts are heard in heaven!' Young. We ought to endeavour to repel all impure thoughts; for by the encouragement of such in our affections, we taint and pollute the immortal soul. Man know thyself, is a good motto. To know ourselves, we must watch our motives and intentions, and review our life and conduct very often, as well as the state of our hearts, by which the heart will be better known; as the root is best known by the fruit.--We ought to examine ourselves with the greatest possible scrutiny.
