In spite of the care and skill with which the material has been overhauled up to this point, it is still likely to contain foreign particles which could not But it is not yet ready for the market. First it is inspected, to insure that it conforms to the standardized quality. Then it is weighed to insure that the customer will receive a bale of the precise weight ordered instead, as in the old days, of a bale weighing from 15 per cent. short to 50 per cent. over the specified weight. Under modern production methods, the purchasing agent who orders a 100-pound bale of waste can rely upon getting that precise quantity. The waste is now ready for compressing and baling. Before this is done, however, the "tare" is made ready. This "tare" consists of wrappings of light, clean burlap and new steel bands, and these are weighed in order that they shall not exceed a specified percentage of the weight of the bale. A single operation of a baling press, operated by electric power, serves to compress the predetermined quantity of the finished waste and at the same time enclose it in its previously weighed "tare." When the bale comes from the press it is weighed once more, and if it is short or overweight the required amount is added or subtracted while the bale is on the scales. Then the bale is completed by being staunchly sewed. A final check on weight is made in the stockroom to which the finished material goes after the baling operation. The completed bales of waste are then ready to ship out on customers' orders.
