The Publisher's Tale. It is 1912 and author Gideon Drew (aged 25) sends his first novel to publishers Clanford and Fox. The two partners like the book so much, they decide to steal it and publish it as their own creation. The book becomes very successful and the partners become extremely wealthy, but Gideon receives nothing. Two years later Gideon's wife and daughter die and Gideon, tortured by his failure to protect and provide for his family, stops writing, joins the army and is sent to fight in Mesopotamia - where he expects to die. In the midst of battle however, he meets a stranger who makes him a proposal that could change his life completely - he reluctantly accepts the offer. Seventy years later Gideon re-appears, and delivers a second novel to the same publishers as before, but now under the ownership of Blake Thornton. The book is also very successful, but this time Gideon receives all the recognition and the rewards he deserves. At now at last he can begin to recover all that he lost seventy years ago - but at what price. How far would anyone go to have the chance to start their life again?show more
