The project has not proved successful for either the agent or the library, and in nearly every case has ended disastrously for those most concerned. Library fire--Again a library has been the prey of the flames as without hindrance they wrapped its contents in the folds of destruction. The St. Paul public library, which was completely destroyed by fire on May 2, illustrated again the insecurity of a precious store of accumulated knowledge against destruction when it has not been housed in fireproof quarters. The sagacity of the library board of St. Paul in taking every precautionary step possible under the conditions and covering as completely as possible the loss by insurance deserves the highest commendation. The foresight in removing the rare and valuable books, some 600 in number, to a place of safety some time ago, because of the known danger of fire in the building, also merits commendation. A clean start with new books and fittings in a new library building isn't a bad prospect, though, to be sure, no one would willingly try the fire method to obtain it. One of the benefits from the fire which became apparent at once was the offer of help from adjacent libraries in tiding over the days of stress. Another was the awakened interest on the part of the public, and which showed itself by public expressions of appreciation of the library's service to the community and by offers of money and books. These in themselves afford some compensation.
