During the past year a system of hourly visiting nursing service, at cost price, has been attempted by various associations, and in Cleveland and Providence the plan has been worked out with considerable success. The demand for this pay service has been largely in the direction of maternity service and nursing care at the time of delivery, which obviously necessitates night calls, and a special Round Table on Night Nursing was held. The system in Cleveland was described, which includes care at the time of delivery, limited instruction and supervision during the pre-natal period, and the provision of attendants to remain in the homes, when necessary. The need for this type of nursing care is strongly evidenced, and the many difiiculties in the way of meeting it are being overcome in at least two cities, while others are making serious efiorts to meet them. The necessity for the development of some form of supervised attendant service has been demonstrated in connection with the extension of visiting nursing care; and in view of the imminence of health insurance it has become a question of grave importance to the nursing profession generally; for the extension of sickness benefit provided by the Health Insurance Acts now under consideration will be so great that it will be impossible for the professional women of the country to meet it, unless they are prepared to supplement their own highly...
