Having heard the arguments pro and con, I am confirmed in the conviction that although "justice should be done though the heavens fall," still, upon the distinctions in the criticisms made, I do not sec that they bring a single iota of argument to bear why the propositions in this report should be sustained by this Association or by the public generally. It is upon the assumption that, if a man is tried for murder, he shall not have the same privilege that some poor devil has who has a few dollars involved; that he shall not have the same right and privilege as the man whose character is involved in defense of himself. I have known cases growing out of rights in regard to character and reputation, and dollars and cents, to be prolonged because the parties regarded their reputation, their rights, and the principles of law, and who have stood firm upon their conviction of right and duty; not only have they devoted time to the litigation, but their purse has been open, and they have stood firm upon their conviction of the principles of right. Why, then, when a life is in jeopardy should we not put the question upon the basis ot right and wrong? We base it upon the principles of legal rights and legal wrongs, and our courts are called upon to adjudicate upon the testimony, and if in the opinion of the attorney--and I do not level down the profession, as my friend in the rear attempted to do, for I am in favor of supporting the dignity of the profession and the honor of the profession, and when any inan undertakes to level down those attributes, although I may agree in some other propositions, yet more
