Great injustice is done and large expense incurred on account of the criminal business done in the United States District Court as the court is now constituted. i In nineteen cases, where the charge in each case was only that of selling whiskey to Indians, thirty-six thousand eight hundred and thirty-six miles of travel was reported by the Buffalo marshals alone for conveying witnesses from the western extremity of the State to Utica and eastern points in the disposition of the cases. This traveling cost the Government three thousand six hundred and eighty-three dollars and sixty cents ($3,683.60) for traveling fees, besides the additional expenses of the district attorney and assistants, and the marshal and his assistants, attending courts away from their official residence, for which an allowance is made by statute. ' The largest fine which was received to reimburse the Government for these large expenses in any one case was the sum of twenty-five dollars. Since the bankruptcy law has been passed, nearly every member of the Bar of the northern district of New York has experienced the inconvenience of a United States District Court clerk's office at one end of the State and the court two hundred miles away, a condition which would be entirely remedied by the proposed bill.
