Neither the temperature of the mixture nor the composition of the three phases can change until one of the three phases has disappeared. The temperature cannot fall until all the liquid phase, E has solidified nor can it rise without the disappearance of either A or B. It must not be understood that the mixture can have only the composition represented by the point E. It may have any composition along the line CD but, in this case, the composition of each phase remains the same, the difference in original composition producing changes in the relative amounts of the three. The line CD, therefore, is a line of non-variant equilibrium. One of the principle uses of the Phase Rule is to determine whether or not true equilibrium has been reached. It is evident that, since an alloy with less than zero degrees of freedom is an impossibility, there can never be more than two crystal phases in contact with, or separating from, a two component liquid metal. Therefore, in a case like that indicated in Fig. 26, p. 53, and illustrated in Fig. 28, p. 55, the presence of three phases, in the microscopic section of the solid alloy, is a positive indication of incomplete equilibrium. CHAPTER IV THE NON-FERROUS ALLOYS OF TECHNICAL IMPORTANCE No attempt will be made to describe or even to name the large and constantly increasing number of nonferrous alloys used in practice.
