Now let me go back and say, in April, 1867, I was united in marriage to Miss Frances Ray, and together we presented ourselves to the Primitive Baptist church and were received in April, 1869, and baptized in May by Elder J. P. Allison. In 1873 I was licensed to preach, and in October, 1876, I was ordained by a presbytery composed of Elders John Stipp, George Wills, M. Loveridge, J. P. Allison and A. Shanks. In 1875 my wife died and the following year I was married to Miss Amanda Westerfield. We moved to Umatilla county, where in the year 1877, Elder A. Sanford and myself constituted the Mizpah church, which now holds her meetings at Touchet, Wash. This was the first church of Primitive Baptists organized in eastern Oregon. The next year, 1878, in May, Elder James Bassett and myself organized the Big Spring church of Primitive Baptists in Union county, Oregon, and I have had the pastoral care of this church since its organization. And while we are weak in members, about twenty, we are in peace and have been since our organization, so that not one trouble among its members has ever come up in the church. The church owns a neat little meeting house in the town of Elgin. There is no other church of our faith nearer than seventy miles. We do not belong to any association, but we hold annually 21 three days meeting, when we generally have some visi.ting ministers with us.
