Bailey, who had traced conversions to its influence; he answered with interest that its success had been as amazing as it was gratifying to himself. "I have a shelf in my library so long (marking with extended hands a distance of about two feet) filled with various editions and translations of that little book." In answer to the direct inquiry as to how it came to be written he said: "I was at dinner in Liverpool after a great missionary meeting and at the home of one of the wealthiest and most liberal friends of missions. The wine came on with the usual pleasant but lighter conversation. Turning to a companion, like-minded about drinking, I said, 'Let us get away from here and go where we may do some good.' It was in our long twilight that we reached our chosen spot in one of the poorest and most populous quarters of the city. We mounted a store-box and began to sing, to read the Scriptures and engage in prayer. As the people were gathered my companion began to preach. I stood beside him, waiting my turn, and the question as to what I should say came to be determined. It was followed by another question, 'what do I want to do?' T want these people to come to Jesus, was the mental answer. Who, then, is Jesus? Where is Jesus? Why come to Jesus? How come to Jesus?' These came j on the instant and I was ready. The address seemed to gain attention that evening and when I had gone home it was somewhat more elaborated and the result preached to my own people on the following Sabbath morning.
