Because I have not kept a diary, - often a dangerous and still oftener a silly practice - but because the most distinguished of the public men herein named were, unfortunately for me, in no way intimately identified with the development of my ministerial career. 'they stood apart, yet within sight. I saw them, heard them, conversed or corresponded with most of them, and have in severest literal terms told only what I personally knew.
