Review Text

This brief volume consists of short commentaries, mostly anecdotal in substance, on selected verses from the Four Gospels of the New Testament. The connection between text and illustration is often oblique and at times marginal, after the manner of William P. Merrill's "Apostolic preacher" who "took a text and went everywhere, preaching the gospel." Bishop Kennedy draws widely on his resources, including both well-known literature and contemporary instances. The width of inclusion, unfortunately is not matched by depth of penetration. Except for a brief word about the New Testament having been written in the Greek of common parlance, no particular reference is made later to the merits or the special illuminations given by the translation offered in the New English Bible. So far as the commentary goes, the translation might just as well have been that of the Revised Standard Version, or even the King James. This volume may be useful as a handbook of "starters" for preachers who do not choose, or are incapable of, reading the New Testament for themselves or responding to it with imagination. There may be more than you think. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
