In such cases the administration of arsenic is often followed by most satisfactory results. I will not stop to inquire how it acts; like the formation of the red blood corpuscles, the action of arsenic is still involved in some obscurity. Clinical experience, however, tells us that it does act beneficially. In the Lancet for April 11th, 1885, p. 654-, Sir Samuel Wilks has recorded cases which were pronounced ' Prof. Binz: Iov. cents-IL, vol. ii., p. 12. by himself and other physicians to be examples of " pernicious " anaemia, and which rapidly got well after arsenic had been prescribed. He also mentions two cases of "anaemia with some discoloration of the skin, suggesting the existence of Addison's disease, which were cured by arsenic," and arrives at the following conclusion: --" No question can arise as to the eflicacy of a remedy when it is prescribed for a person who is weekly and monthly declining in health, and who as rapidly or more rapidly regains his health and strength under its use. When this has been observed in a large number of instances, the proof of its value is complete." I have had the good fortune to see similar instances of the beneficial effects of five-minim doses of liquor arsenicalis given twice or three times a day. In my opinion the eflicacy of the remedy is diminished if combined with iron, but the addition of acetic or sulphuric ether appears to me to render its action more energetic. It has been said that when iron is tolerated in chlorosis, the remedy "is only effectual when administered in large doseshow more
