Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... system shares to the fullest extent. Heidenhain in his article on the histology and physiology of the duodenal mucous membrane (P_fl'altger's Archiv, vol. xliii., 1888), has shown how large a part in the office of absorption is played by the blood-vessels, and from the observations I have been able to make on the influence of massage on the temperature, blood supply, and rate of absorption from the intestines, both in healthy and sick persons, I am persuaded that carefully regulated manipulation of the abdomen, modified in force, frequency, and duration to meet the requirements of each individual case, is one of the most effectual means of treatment, frequently the only efficacious therapy, in many cases of enfeebled assimilation. I have had opportunities of proving its value in cases of sprue, chronic dysentery, tropical diarrhoea, muscular atony of the stomach and intestines, and various forms of cachexia in which the gastro-intestinal tract has suffered in common with the other tissues. In some of these cases the salol test has been applied to control and verify the results attributed to the use of massage, and its efficacy in increasing the absorption of the contents of the intestine has been established. 1 Le Progres Medical, February 12, 1887. There are many details bearing on the administration of massage for the purpose of aiding assimilation which assume a definite value when the salol test is employed; but within the limits of this paper it is not possible to do more than to offer an outline of the plan adopted in a large number of experimental observations on the influence massage exercises on the rate of absorption from the intestine in health and disease.
