Description

From the New York Times bestselling Julie James comes this "tantalizing dessert--a delicious delightful read that all hopeless romantics will enjoy" (Chicago Sun-Times). For fans of Susan Mallery and Rachel Gibson. WHEN IT COMES TO THE LAWS OF ATTRACTION...

Payton Kendall and J.D. Jameson are lawyers who know the meaning of objection. A feminist to the bone, Payton has fought hard to succeed in a profession dominated by men. Born wealthy, privileged, and cocky, J.D. has fought hard to ignore her. Face to face, they're perfectly civil. They have to be. For eight years they've kept a safe distance and tolerated each other as co-workers for one reason only: to make partner at the firm.

...THERE ARE NO RULES.

But all bets are off when they're asked to join forces on a major case. At first apprehensive, they begin to appreciate each other's dedication to the law--and the sparks between them quickly turn into attraction. But the increasingly hot connection doesn't last long when they discover that only one of them will be named partner. Now it's an all out war. And the battle between the sexes is bound to make these lawyers hot under the collar...

Our customer reviews

This is the first book I've read of Julie James and it will definitely not be my last! I'm a big fan of Pride and Prejudice and that's what drew me to this book. Although not a modern day retelling of the story, it just somehow feels like a nod to the classic... maybe because I see both characters as the modern day Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet. Although they spend as much time in this book competing against each other than being together romantically, there's a solid, underlying chemistry between J.D. and Payton -- even when they're fighting like cats and dogs. The romance is subtle but the two characters' witty banter and the hilarious situations they put each other in totally make up for the lack of steamy romantic scenes. This is a case where subtlety is just undeniably hot! Both characters are smart, strong, and ambitious, and I like how they are equals in their profession. Nowadays we are saturated with the poor, innocent heroine helplessly drawn to the successful manwhorish millionaire hero. It's refreshing to read about two characters, although coming from two different financial backgrounds, on common ground with (or against) each other in both their smarts and experience. They are also believable in their profession although I'm not too sure if working in a law firm is as fun as it's portrayed here :) I would characterized this more as chick lit, and for someone who does not enjoy the genre, I found this book engaging, laugh out loud funny and undeniably sweet.show more
