The first conside ration is, how much of the line A B represents one foot, if A B represents one foot nine inches--that is, twentyone inches. If A B is divided into seven equal parts, then each part represents three inches, and four such parts twelve inches or one foot. Complete the scale as shown in the figure. 2. Diagonal Scales. a. The line A B represents 500 miles. Show hy diagonal divisions how to measure miles. Divide AB into five equal parts. Each part then represents one hundred miles. Divide the first of these divisions on the left hand into ten equal parts, and draw ten parallel lines helow A B, and equidistant from it and from each other. Complete the scale, and number it as in the figure. It is evident that each of the divisions in A C represents ten miles, because A C represents 100 miles. Suppose it is required to set ofl' 8 miles from this scale, 8 D on the line 8 is eight miles, and the distance E F represents 448 miles, etc. b. A B represents 100 feet: show how to measure single feet by diagonal divisions. Divide AB into ten equal parts; each part is of A B--that is, 10 ft. long.
