Designs have been made and models are being built in which this leverage system is incorporated in rotary forms, intended to cover electrical application to the principle. There is hardly an end to the list of types of prime movers in which the Powell System cannot be advantageously applied; it can be easily and quickly incorporated into practically all standard forms of engines; or each form of leverage may be a machine in itself. Engines Operated in Rarefied Atmosphere One of the new problems confronting engineers is how to produce an engine that can deliver normal efficiency at elevations where atmospheric pressure is reduced; for instance, at 15,000 feet, pressure is lowered from 14.7 pounds per square inch to about ten pounds per square inch. This applies to all engines used in mountainous sections, but more particularly to those employed in aerial navigation. Many accidents have occurred by reason of the lessening power of engines as airplanes ascend. The demand for greater altitudes, both for scientific investigations along the lines of meteorology and for war purposes, is limited by the decline of the engine as an effective motor when greater heights are reached. The long piston stroke of the Powell Leverage not only permits a larger intake of air, but conserves from the energy generated by combustion a higher proportion for power. Under the conditions given it is essential that every unit of heat possible should be converted into work, for the forces of nature, in this case the atmosphere, are acting antagonistically towards the aviator.
