Review Text

Hugh Schonfield (The Passover Plot, Those Incredible Christians) has devoted most of his writings to Messianism, and principally to the disengagement of the true Messianic message from the dogmatic accretion of traditional Christianity. This work pursues the same theme, but on a more positive and more startling note. On the basis of a revelation or vision experienced by the author in 1938, Schonfield outlines the means by which man may save himself - a means which is termed "the Politics of God," as opposed to the politics of the world, and which is to be adopted and put into execution by a new Servant-People to the end that all the resources of the solar system may be harnessed to meet the expansion of human needs; waste eliminated; barriers to free intercourse and association demolished; and a world society created to coordinate rather than rule, to cooperate rather than exploit. The preparations for this new evolutionary stage constitute a distinct phase (the third) in what Dr. Schonfield regards as the Divine Plan for mankind's salvation - a phase which is, in reality, merely the application of the principles of combined Hebrew and Christian Messianism. Such a brief description may lead one to the belief that Schonfield is a religious crank; a thorough reading, however, dispels it. One is impressed not only by the author's sincerity but also by his intelligence; not so much by his "vision" but by his presentation of corroborative empirical evidence and his appeal to reason. In any case, The Polities of God will be even more controversial than The Passover Plot. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
