Description

Excerpt from Political Thought in Perspective In several cases, I have myself translated materials hitherto unavail able in English, revised older translations, and modernized the spelling, punctuation, and arrangement of older texts in English. In several other cases, I have been able to include materials not easily accessible, or virtu ally forgotten. The essay Of Lord Acton on John Stuart Mill is an ex ample. Originally published in The Rambler (1859 it was signed only with the initial A. Yet there is no doubt that Acton, who was the editor and who frequently Signed his articles in this way, was the author. I have prefaced each chapter with a brief introductory note; its pur pose is to provide some of the salient biographical and literary facts about the writer and the subject of his essay. A full - length commentary of my own on the commentaries reproduced in this volume would be out of place, Since the essays speak for themselves. Moreover, I have presented such fuller commentaries and criticisms in my earlier books, Great Politi cal Thinkers: Plato to the Present (1951) and Modern Political Thought.
