Review Text

Jack McEvoy has a really cushy beat as a crime reporter on the Rocky Mountain News. His secret to dealing with death was to keep it at arm's length, but his rule did not protect him when his twin brother Sean is found dead. A homicide detective, Sean was obsessed with a horrific murder of a local student that they could not solve. He was found out by the lake, having shot himself with his own gun, the words 'Out of space, Out of time' written on the fogged windscreen of his car. As Jack comes to terms with his loss, he cannot accept that his brother killed himself. So he does what comes naturally, investigates and writes. He discovers enough evidence to get the local police to re-open the case as murder, while his research into the surprising rise in police suicides reveals a disturbing pattern of coincidences that suggests a cop-killer is choosing his victims with great care. Jack follows a trail of unusual 'suicide notes' across America as he pursues the story of a lifetime, a killer who leaves mysterious clues inspired by Edgar Allan Poe. But 'the Poet' knows that Jack is on the trail. Add pornography on the Internet, the famed FBI Quantico research unit, ambiguous love affairs and more twists than a serpent's tail, this blend of police procedural and psycho-thriller is a perfect crime thriller.
