Review quote

A moving memoir, it reveals, among other things, the connection between his father (who died suddenly in Browne's teens) and King Kong. It is a fascinating exploration of how to make picture books and why they matter. -- Nicolette Jones The Sunday Times 20110424 Children's Book of the Year 2011: Former Children's Laureate Anthony Browne's books always pass the crutial 'read-it-again' test because his surreal, instantly recognisable illustrations reward repeated scrutiny. In 'Playing the Shape Game', which comes with masses of those fascinating illustrations - and texts based on conversations with his son Jo - he shows in gratifying detail how his childhood enjoyment of "the shape game" (art) became the career he loves. -- Sara O'Reily Time Out 20111222show more
