I hope you "look to the rock whence" you were "hewn, and to the hole of the pit whence" you were "digged." (Isa. li. 1.) I hope you go softly because of your past sins--that you are humbled when you think of them. I hope you keep your heart with all diligence, and flee daily from the sin that doth so easily beset you. When Manaen went with Paul and Barnabas, he must often have thought of the days when he sat at Herod's table--and so must you often think of your former ways in the haunts of sin. Reader, don't you think that Manaen often prayed for Herod? He may often have helped Herod to sin, and led him on in the way of temptation--and now he felt doubly bound to pray for him. And have you such thoughts within you? Do you remember your old friends and companions? They may have led you into sin--or you may have led them, --do you pray for them? Manaen, I dare say, was not contented with praying for Herod--he must have talked to him--he must have entreated him to believe in Jesus--to break off his sins by righteousness--and, through grace, to be a new creature. Christian Reader, have you spoken faithfully to your former friends? Have you told them simply what the Lord has done for your soul? Say not, "It is of no use to speak to them. Their heart is so hard, it cannot be softened." Was not your heart as hard as theirs? Yet God has given you an heart of flesh. Cannot He do the same for them? He changed the heart of Manaen.
