Review Text

Airline captain Mike Hagen always hides an ice-filled thermos of bourbon "spookers" well down inside the men's lavatory disposal bin whenever he pilots an airliner from New York to Houston, Houston to San Diego, San Diego to New York. He has his alcoholism completely under control, marvelously masked from his copilot and stewardesses. Rarely can it be noticed, even by his mistress, although his wife and two daughters aren't fooled. Despite his age (42) Mike's metabolism is still fine. In fact his real problem is that he drinks too well; he has none of the obvious signs of the drunk. But he does carry a cosmetics kit: Visine, Sen-Sen, and a covermark to coat breaking blood vessels in his cheeks. Some dangerous midair miscalculations force Mike to face his problem and try A.A., psychiatry and a drying-out farm. A convincing story of booze disintegration at 30,000 feet or on ground level, plus a gratifying recovery. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
