Excerpt from Pietas Oxoniensis: In Memory of Sir Thomas Bodley, Knt. And the Foundation of the Bodleian Library; October, 1902 Hatfield, iv. 29 occupying, in accordance with treaty, a chief place at the meetings of the Council of State, and having a vote on all proposed measures. The position was one of great delicacy and difficulty, but he filled it for nearly five years with such discretion and wise conciliation as to win, he tells us, gratitude from the country, and from 'her Majesty many comfortable letters of her gracious accept ance', although sometimes expressing dissatisfaction. So great was the confidence generally reposed in him that formal instructions were seldom sent, and matters were practically left to his own judgement. After twice being permitted to return home at his earnest desire, for short intervals, in May 1 93 and in May 1 59 upon the death of his brother Miles', he was twice again sent back to the Hague on special and secret errands, but at length Obtained his final revocation in July 15-96. His wish to be recalled was largely caused by the mutual ill-will and jealousy Of Burleigh and the Earl Of Essex, who both professed to be his friends, as well as partly by illness, from which he suffered much in 1 9 y.
