Review Text

One day Bella is shopping in the King's Road, London, and wanders along to the edge of Chelsea to look for World's End. Bella is lonely, because her doctor father is always busy and her stepmother, Marjorie, hates her. She is also scared and sad because a terrible thing has happened to her friend Alice. She knows that somewhere in a house in World's End live the band she sometimes sings with. And, true to all good fairy tales, Bella finds the house and discovers that although the band are not there, the front door is open. And, of course, she goes inside and looks around, finds a chaise longue and falls asleep. Like all fairy-tale heroines, Bella is very beautiful. She has black hair and white skin and rose red lips. So maybe it is not surprising that she wakes to find that all the members of the band have been standing round the couch, staring at her while she slept. All seven of them, Pete and Dave and Phil and Steve and Kenny and Harry and Greg, shadowy figures in the muted light of the room, for she does not wake until it is dark. Bella moves in to the house with the band and tries to mother them all into some kind of organization. She is to sing with them for the whole summer, songs that Greg has written. And some strange and dangerous things are to happen before the end of the school holidays. Set in the l960s, this is a charmingly written tale of friendship, love and growing up - and some inexplicably odd happenings. (Kirkus UK)show more
