English gentlemen or ladies, intending to pass some months in Vienna, and wishing during their stay to acquire a knowledge ofGerman, cannot do better than to apply to Prof. Clairmont, Wallnerstrasse, Nr. 267. Institutions of Art The imperial Academy of fine arts, in the Annagasse, Nr. 980. This institution has ' reached its present state of perfection under the various patronage of the empress Maria Theresa, Joseph II. and his late Majesty, Francis I. It stands under the curatorship of Prince Metternich, with a president, a secretary, and 2 ordinary and 10 extraordinary counsellors, which latter are all professors. It consists of four schools. One for painting, -one for sculpture and engraving, one for architecture, and one for the application of these arts-to manufactures. The course of instruction lasts from 1" November to 31" August. A silver prize is awarded annually; a gold one every 3 years. Promising young students are supplied with pecuniary assistance to enable them to cultivate their talents in foreign countries, where they are required to make a stay of some years, especially at Rome. The public Ewhibition of pictures, which takes place annually in the month of April and May, in the halls of the above institution, and where the works of Arnerling, Danhauser, Daffinger, Enders, Fendi, Gauermann, Petter, Ranftl, Schiavoni and others, make a display, that...show more
